ROUND 7 – MYSTICS V PULSE PREVIEW

Round 7 of the ANZ Premiership wraps up on Sunday afternoon as the Central Pulse head north to try and level the score with the GoSweetSpot Mystics who will meet them on their home court at Trusts Arena, Waitakere.

With their last meeting ony two weeks ago and fresh in their minds, the Mystics know that they will be up against a Pulse side determined to put the 55-47 loss behind them.

“We learnt that they are a team that never goes away and is as good as every other team on their day. It was tight match throughout last time and we expect the same this weekend,” says Mystics Assistant Coach Rob Wright.

Currently sitting third on a tight Premiership table, after a strong win over the Stars last week, the Mystics know they need to keep their focus and discipline to get up over the Pulse and keep pushing forward to the playoffs, Wright noting, “The last couple of matches we have been much more disciplined with the ball in attack which has resulted in a lower loss rate, we need to continue that this match as well as find a way to win more ball. They have internationals at both ends of the court and we have to find a way to contain them across the match.”

The answer could be in the Mystics midcourt leadership trio of Michaela Sokolich Beatson, Peta Toeava and Tayla Earle who were ruthless last weekend, disrupting play and a delivering the ball into the goal circle with speed to shooters who were in sublime form.

In a devastating blow for the Mystics, it was confirmed this week that they would finish the season without the services of the league leading defender Catherine Hall, who suffered a foot injury in the round 5 clash with the Pulse.

“The team is feeling really good. Obviously we are all really disappointed for Catherine and her injury, and wish her all the very best for a speedy return. What Catherine’s injury has allowed us to do is to promote another one of our training partners. Leila has been competing well throughout the season and has earnt this opportunity,” says Wright.

With the Pulse boasting an International shooting line up in Ameliaranne Ekenasio and Ine-Marie Venter, defenders Phoenix Karaka, Charlotte Manley and recent debutant Leila Atkins are going to need to continue their menacing form to contain shooters who are not afraid to put up the two point shot.
