The Northern Mystics have named their 2026 squad, and it’s one to be excited about, bursting with both youth and experience.

After reaching the Grand Final in 2025, the Mystics have retained the bulk of the squad to have another shot at the title next season. Losing only Donnell Wallam (Firebirds), Holly Rae (retirement) and Hannah Glen (returning home), the backbone of the side stays in place with Sophia Lafaiali’i elevated into the 10 person squad after a breakout ’25 season.

“Being able to retain the heart of our team in such a challenging netball environment is awesome.  I like a bit of change too, and it’s an unknown stage,” says Northern Mystics Head Coach, Tia Winikerei.

That change Winikerei refers to comes in the experienced form of Silver Ferns, Maia Wilson (from the Stars) and Phoenix Karaka (back from maternity leave). Both players will bring a wealth of knowledge and dynamic game play to their respective circles.

“Phee is really coachable and in 2024 we started trying new things with her.  We’re keen to pick this up and run with it.     She’s athletic, got amazing elevation and knows how to drive performance. It’s going to be exciting to watch her link up with Catherine, Charlotte & Miccy.”

“Maia can shoot, she knows how to set up and lead the shooting circle.   We like the speed at which she can play and the way she manipulates space with her timing and strength.   She’s also super experienced and I can see a variety of different ways for her to connect with both Filly and Fia,” says Winikerei.

With the heart of the side, Tayla Earle, Peta Toeava, Katie Te Ao and Michaela Sokolich-Beatson, returning to drive the team through court with their fast, innovative and athletic game play, the coaching team of Winikerei and Rob Wright know they’ve got something special to work with.

“Having the chance to keep reinventing our game style is important to keep the team and the fans excited.   I believe in everyone to do this and our squad has the ability to keep pushing boundaries.  I can’t wait to get at it,” says Winikerei.
