The LG Mystics kick-started the third year of the ANZ championship competition with a  historic, and at times "edge of the seat" thrilling  55 - 52 win against the Adelaide Thunderbirds in Auckland on Saturday.

The LG Mystics were pushed to breaking point by a raft of injuries to key defenders, but held off a last minute charge by the Thunderbirds, beating last season's losing finalists by three goals.

Newly signed goal keep Althea Byfield played a strong and inspirational game, pulling off four rebounds, four intercepts and 10 defensive tips, despite injuries. Goal shoot Catherine Latu topped the scoring for the home side, with 30 goals from 32 attempts. Three long-range goals to new recruit goal attack Maria Tutaia restored the home side's advantage and carried them to their first-ever defeat over an Australian team.

They led 15-12 after the opening quarter, 27-26 at halftime and 42-36 with one stanza remaining.

"I am just excited about our whole team effort - and to beat who was in the finals last year was fantastic," said LG Mystics captain Temepara George.
